George Zimmerman, who has been recently focused on his bail hearings, raising money through his web sites and his parents web sites, will now presumably move to seek a Stand Your Ground hearing. The hearing would preceed any trial which is not expected until sometime in 2013. A trial date of 2013 is not unusual for a high profile case such as that of Trayon Martin. However, if George Zimmerman is successful on his Stand Your Ground defense, there will be no trial. A Stand Your Ground defense is a complete bar to a trial and amounts to a complete self –defense of the killing. The hearing is heard before the trial judge. And this is where all of George Zimmerman’s lies, interviews and admissions will come back to haunt him. The hearing will be heard before Judge Lester. Judge Lester is the same judge to whom the Zimmermans lied about their income—with wife, Shellie stating they had no income. Zimmerman’s web site had collected over $130,000 and they were well aware of … [Read more...] about Zimmerman May Request Stand Your Ground Hearing

Why the Democratic National Convention Matters
To say that the 2012 presidential campaign is not nearly as exciting as the 2008 presidential campaign is an enormous understatement. The political process and political landscape is changing on an almost daily basis but most are not aware of it. In tracking the states that have passed voter ID laws, have ongoing or pending voter ID trials or purged voter lists, this presidential campaign should be a wake- up call for all Americans who care about freedoms and democracy. August 6, 2012 marked the 47th anniversary of President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the Voter Rights Act of 1965 into law. In doing so, he gave a speech where he said, that the right to vote is the basic right by which all others, without it, are meaningless. And we are fighting today to keep the right to vote and in some instances to restore it. This is not a time for progressives to openly complain about what President Obama has not done, is not doing or won’t do. It’s not a time to jump ship. It is a … [Read more...] about Why the Democratic National Convention Matters
Dems Fighting for the Soul of the Country
This year, we are facing a clear choice in the 2012 election. We can continue to fight for moving our country forward with President Obama. Or we can take our country back with the Republicans. Republicans and their Tea Party faction are proud to announce they want to take us back instead of forward. And if you’re African American or another minority, a woman, the elderly, students or anyone in between, going back is a scary option. And we’ve seen already seen some of the signs of Republicans taking us back. Republicans have attacked voting rights with a vengeance since before the last election. And now over half of the states have some sort of voter ID laws which make voting, a constitutional right, a more restrictive right. And in fourteen states, the strictest form of voter ID exists. All of these laws amount to a massive and systemic attack on the constitutional right to vote. Subtly they amount to a poll tax for those who must purchase legal documents and in some … [Read more...] about Dems Fighting for the Soul of the Country
Forty-Seven Years After the Voter Rights Act, Blacks are Still Disenfranchised
Happy birthday to President Barack Obama who celebrated his 51st birthday on Saturday, August 4. And yes, he was born in the USA to those birther doubters who won't go away. Returning to politics, the Republican House and all members went on their long summer break last week until September. And while they may not have gotten much done for the economy and jobs, they intend to be working on their time off. They plan to draft a partisan lawsuit against Attorney General Eric Holder in the fast and furious gun case. They just won't quit playing political games and do some work for the country. Republicans are still fuming over Attorney General Holder's attempts to derail their voter ID agenda to disenfranchise voters by Holder's enforcing the Voter Rights Act of 1965. On August 6, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed the voters Rights Act of 1965. . The Voter rights Act of 1965, empowered the federal government to oversee voter registration and elections in … [Read more...] about Forty-Seven Years After the Voter Rights Act, Blacks are Still Disenfranchised
Judge in Zimmerman Case Refuses to Step Down
Zimmerman Judge Says No to Request to Remove Him Judge Lester, by written response to Zimmerman’s motion for him to recuse himself, told the defense and prosecutor that he is not going anywhere. So Zimmerman will have to work another angle on the case. His attorneys filed the motion, in essence stating they could not get a fair trial because their client lied to the judge. Meanwhile Zimmerman is acting like a celebrity giving interviews and soliciting funds through his web site. And now his parents have a web site. Shellie Zimmerman, George’s wife, is now in hot legal water herself, following Zimmerman’s first bond hearing in which she allegedly lied to the court about the couple’s finances (and got her husband released on a mere $150,000 bond). She was subsequently indicted for perjury, and on July 27, she pled not guilty to those charges For the latest LegalSpeaks commentary on George Zimmerman, be sure to read Lawyers. com’s August 1st article by Michele Bowman … [Read more...] about Judge in Zimmerman Case Refuses to Step Down
